What I Read – May 2010

Here’s my monthly round up of what I read!  Ranged pretty far and wide this month between historical fiction, mystery, travel writing and m/m romance.  What can I say?  I like to keep things interesting 🙂

God’s Middle Finger, Richard Grant
5 stars
Grant attempts his own heart of darkness journey into the lawless center of the Sierra Madres.

The Teahouse Fire, Ellis Avery
2 stars
Aurelia arrives in 19th century Japan with her missionary uncle and is adopted into the famous Shin family when her uncle is killed in a mysterious fire.  Rapidly modernizing Japan is seen through the eyes of this muddled West-East narrative.

Why Mermaids Sing (St. Cyr #3), C.S. Harris
4 stars
Excellent third installment in this historical mystery series.  Young men are being murdered all over London and St. Cyr is called into discover the strange link between the killings.

Caught Running, Madeline Urban & Abigail Roux
3 stars
Sweet, romantic story about former high school classmates Brandon and Jake.  Both are back at their alma mater, they studiously ignore each other until thrown together and the sparks fly!

The 19th Wife, David Ebersoff
4 stars
Contemporary mystery illuminates the dark past of polygamy and the terrible toll it has on the women and children who are caught in this lifestyle.  Compelling and well-researched.

How about you?  What did you read this past month?  Anyone else as excited as I am about The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest??
