A Month in Books: March

Ouch.  Way to kill the reading mojo!  With no new series started (actually, I kind of needed a break), I buckled down and read one serious historical fiction and a nonfiction.  Two books?!?! Yes, only two books … but they were both very, very good. 🙂

The Tokaido Road, Lucia St. Clair Robson
4 Stars
Lady Asano, daughter of the dead Lord Asano and his “outside” wife, sets out on an adventure from Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto, along the Tokaido Road, to avenge her father’s death.  A beautiful retelling of the famous 47 ronin of feudal Japan.

Governess: The Lives and Times of the Real Jane Eyres, Ruth Brandon
3 Stars
More a book on the evolution of women’s right in Britain than a close look at governesses, Brandon’s book is nonetheless fascinating for its intimate portraits of the handful of governesses who left behind diaries detailing their experiences.
